WE DO FUEL INJECTOR ULTRASONIC CLEANING AND FLOW TESTING OF PETROL FUEL INJECTORS.  WE CAN ALSO BALANCE FUEL INJECTORS.

 

THIS PAGE HAS BEEN DEVELOPED TO EXPLAIN EXACTLY WHAT IS MEANT BY FUEL INJECTOR BALANCING.  WE FELT IT WAS NECESSARY, AS THERE ARE NUMEROUS CIRCUMSTANCES WHEREIN THE TERM "INJECTOR BALANCING" IS MISUSED, AND MAY CONFUSE  A READER ON A SERVICE PROVIDED.

 

FUEL INJECTOR ULTRASONIC CLEANING AND TESTING IS EXACTLY AS THE WORDING INDICATES.  A CUSTOMER SENDS IN A SET OF FUEL INJECTORS.  WE TEST AND ULTRASONICALLY CLEAN THE INJECTORS, AS EXPLAINED ON OTHER PAGES OF THIS WEB SITE.  THE INJECTORS ARE FLOW TESTED AS RECEIVED FROM YOUR SHIPMENT.  THEY ARE THEN REFLOW TESTED AFTER ULTRASONIC CLEANING.  

 

TESTING AND ULTRASONIC CLEANING OF INJECTORS  IS NOT INJECTOR BALANCING.

 

WHILE, IN MOST CASES, TESTING AND ULTRASONIC CLEANING OF INJECTORS WILL RESTORE FUEL INJECTORS TO MANUFACTURED SPECS,  THE TESTING AND CLEANING PROCESS IS, IN THE TRUE DEFINITION, IS NOT BALANCING INJECTOR FUEL FLOW RATES.

 

IN THE TRUE DEFINITION OF INJECTOR BALANCING...

 

MORE INJECTORS (OF THE SAME PART NUMBER) THAT ARE FITTED ON THE ENGINE, ARE SEND FOR FLOW TESTING AND ULTRASONIC CLEANING.   FOR EXAMPLE...IF THE ENGINE IS FITTED WITH SIX INJECTORS...THEN PERHAPS EIGHT, NINE OR TEN INJECTORS ARE SENT IN FOR TESTING.  ALL OF THE INJECTORS ARE TESTED AND CLEANED, AND THEN, THE TESTER SELECTS SIX INJECTORS WHICH PROVIDE THE LEAST STANDARD DEVIATION OF FLOW RATE...(SELECTING SIX INJECTORS WHICH HAVE THE CLOSEST FLOW RATES...IE...MATCHING THE FLOW RATES), AND THE REMAINING INJECTORS ARE RETURNED TO THE OWNER AS SPARES.  FLOW RATE STANDARD DEVIATION IS EXPLAINED   here

 

IN MOST CASES, FOR AN INDIVIDUAL WITH A DAILY DRIVER VEHICLE,  INJECTOR BALANCING IS NOT NECESSARY.  IF THE TESTING AND ULTRASONIC CLEANING PROCESS PUTS YOUR INJECTORS WITHIN  3 % STANDARD DEVIATION (OR LESS), THEN YOUR INJECTORS ARE GOOD TO BE REFITTED IN YOUR ENGINE.

 

IF HOWEVER, YOU WANT THE MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE FROM YOUR ENGINE   (YOU ARE RACING THE VEHICLE, OR AN ENGINE PURIST), THEN PERHAPS INJECTOR BALANCING IS RIGHT FOR YOU.   IF TESTING AND CLEANING YOUR ORIGINAL SIX INJECTORS DOES NOT RESULT IN THE SIX ENGINE FITTED INJECTORS PROVIDING A STANDARD DEVIATION OF 1 TO 3 % DEVIATION, BUT TESTING THE SIX ORIGINAL INJECTORS, PLUS THE OTHERS SENT IN FOR CLEANING AND TESTING, AND THEN AGAIN SELECTING A SET OF SIX INJECTORS, THAT PROVIDE A STANDARD DEVIATION OF LESS THAN 1 % DEVIATION, THEN INJECTOR BALANCING IS THE WAY TO GO.

 

HERE IS AN EXAMPLE.....

 

A CUSTOMER SENT IN NINE INJECTORS FROM A 1983 BMW 633CSI.  THE ENGINE IS AN IN-LINE SIX CYLINDER...3.2 LITER.  THREE EXTRA INJECTORS WERE SENT TO CLEAN AND TEST IF NECESSARY.  PRE TESTING OF THE ORIGINAL FITTED INJECTORS PROVIDED A STANDARD DEVIATION OF 3.74 %.  OUTSIDE THE STANDARD OF 3 % DEVIATION.  AFTER ULTRASONIC CLEANING, THE SIX ORIGINALLY FITTED INJECTORS CLEANED UP TO 2.03 % STANDARD DEVIATION.  THE DEVIATION WAS WITHIN SPEC...FOR A DAILY DRIVER (1 TO 3 % DEVIATION)  AND THE OTHER INJECTORS WERE NOT NEEDED.  NO ADDITIONAL CLEANING AND TESTING REQUIRED, AND NO BALANCING REQUIRED, AS THE VEHICLE WAS A DAILY DRIVER.

 

IF THIS CUSTOMER WERE RACING THE VEHICLE, HE MAY HAVE ELECTED TO HAVE THE OTHER INJECTORS CLEANED AND TESTED.  WE WOULD THEN SELECT SIX INJECTORS THAT WOULD PERHAPS PUT THE FLOW RATE STANDARD DEVIATION AT 1 % OR LESS.  IT IS NOT ALWAYS POSSIBLE TO ACHIEVE 1% OR LESS.  OEM INJECTOR SPECS ARE NOT TYPICALLY THIS TIGHT.  THE MANUFACTURERS ARE FINE WITH CLOSE FLOW RATES...AND NOT EXACT FLOW RATES.

 

WITH EACH SET OF INJECTORS RECEIVED AND FOR ANY V ENGINE (TWO BANK ENGINE) WE WILL SELECT YOUR TESTED SETS OF INJECTORS TO FIT ON EACH ENGINE BANK, TO PROVIDE THE LEAST STANDARD DEVIATION ON INJECTOR FLOW RATE  PER BANK.  THIS WILL TYPICALLY BE SELECTING INJECTORS WITH THE HIGHEST FLOW RATE FOR ONE BANK, AND INJECTORS WITH THE LOWEST FLOW RATE FOR THE OTHER BANK.  WE HAVE FOUND THAT IN DOING SO, THE STANDARD DEVIATION CAN BE REDUCED ON A PER BANK BASIS, WITH BETTER ENGINE PERFORMANCE AND BETTER FUEL ECONOMY.  NO ADDITIONAL COST TO DO THIS.

 

IF THE ABOVE PARAGRAPH SOUNDS ILLOGICAL  (IE.  PUTTING HIGHEST FLOW INJECTORS ON ONE BANK..AND LOWEST FLOW INJECTORS ON THE OPPOSITE BANK), THE EXPLANATION CAN BE ATTRIBUTED TO INJECTOR PULSE CONTROL VIA INPUT FROM EACH BANKS 02 SENSOR, AND IS EXPLAINED ON THIS PAGE   02 sensor and ECU operation
